Brilliant Hair Naturally

Every year we spend millions of pounds on hair, styling products and visits to the salon. This could be because we see our hair as our crowning glory; it's often the very first thing we notice about a person when we meet them.

It helps boost our self-esteem when our own hair looks good.

Hair is mainly a protein (keratin) and moisture (water). Protein makes the hair grow stronger, while moisture helps it to bend and shape. If you're dehydrated your hair will become brittle, with little movement, body or texture. If you lack protein, your hair will be lacklustre, weak and prone to breakage. The hair shaft is the part of the hair that we see; the root is under the scalp, surrounded by the hair follicle. The base of each follicle contains blood vessels bringing nourishment to the hair, which is why a good blood supply is also essential for healthy growing hair. The shaft is composed of the external cuticle, middle cortex and inner medulla. Under a microscope, a healthy cuticle is made up of layers which should all lie flat. If the hair is damaged or in poor condition these layers will stick up, making hair frizzy and uncontrollable.

Everyday stress will affect your hair. Conditions such as stress-related alopecia and male pattern baldness are also affected by stress. So, managing the stress in one's life can really help, and regular treatments such as Indian Head Massage can reduce tension and stimulate blood flow to the scalp. But the products we use to shampoo, condition, style and colour our hair can also put our hair and scalp under stress. Hair products often include silicone to thicken hair and make it silky and shiny. However, silicone coats the hair and scalp, rather like clingfilm, and builds up over time, damaging the hair and leaving it duller and unhealthy.
